The children's books on this page are our kids' favourite titles that don't quite fit on the other pages. You can see some of the books weve studied for educational purposes on the blog page of that subject. The other themed pages are all listed at the side or you can return to the main category listing here. The red links are for the USA store and the blue for the UK - both ship internationally.

The New Internationalist World Guide. Daniel got this fascinating book for Christmas from Rachel. Every country in the world detailed - history, politics, human rights, environmental reputations...

Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini. Daniel really enjoys these books and is keenly anticipating the third in the series. Medieval, magic and dragons... wonderfully imagined.

The Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer. Charlotte loves these stories of a young criminal genius. Fierce fairies here! Her and a friend even invented, designed and made a complex board game around the plot and characters.

The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. We have loved these over the years and were most satisfied with the ending. Apart from the fact that these are very exciting, well written, magical stories they also promote the idea of doing good even when it's difficult. Love is the key to all in the end and we love that (no pun intended). The books can be compared to eating a slice of gorgeous chocolate cake, savouring all the different elements of taste, texture and indulgence. We love the Knight bus, Diagon Alley, love to hate Umbridge with her pink and fluffy nastiness, we love Hagrid and Luna... brilliant books.

The next two titles were written by J.K.Rowling in aid of Comic Relief - they are an excellent read for Harry Potter fans! Available singly in the UK and in a box set in the USA (below).

What a great book about numbers. I used to watch Johnny Ball's series and wonder why maths there was so interesting but so boring at school. It starts off like early years Waldorf numeracy, looking at the history of counting but moves on to amazing things like the Fibonacci sequence and phi, Pi, magic tricks, mazes, laws of chance and chaos - Daniel is fascinated by this book - what a change from the maths hating child he was. I (Lucy), who passed arithmatic 'O' Grade but have the numeracy skills of a baked bean, am also learning from this!

'Positively Mother Goose' by Diane Loomans and Karen Kohlberg. Happy versions of well known nursery rhymes. No one falls down and breaks their crown or gets smacked soundly in this book! Some remain unchanged such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

'Marion the Magnet's First Mission' by Sharon Hackleman. We were lucky enough to be sent a copy of this wonderful book by the author. Marion is sent on a mission to planet Earth by the Universal Guides Committee to teach children about the magnetic power of their thoughts - both our children loved this (well and us parents too!). It is available on the author's interactive site here in both hardcover and as an ebook or from Amazon below.

'The Small Good Wolf' - a reworking of the Red Riding Hood story with the wolf no longer cast as the villain - there is a big, bad human instead! Very funny book striving to put right the incorrect version we have all been told...

The Horrible Histories collection is growing in Daniel's bedroom - his favourite read just now. Declaring itself 'history with the nasty bits left in' it really does liven history up and educate kids. Our two most recent additions are

Bloody Scotland - Buy UK only

and

Dark Knights and Dingy castles - Buy UK only

These next two titles were Christmas presents to Daniel and Charlotte from Catriona - they are well read favourites now!

'The Book of Wizard Craft - in which the apprentice finds spells, potions, fantastic tales and 50 enchanting things to make' edited by Lynne Gibbs and illustrated by Lindy Burnett. Definitely influenced by the world of Harry Potter this book is a wonderful mix of storytelling, crafts, facts and myth - lots of sticky things to make and do too!!

'Finding Fairies- secrets for attracting little people from around the world' by Michelle Roehm McCann, Marianne Monson-Burton and David Hohn. A detailed exploration of fairies from different continents - also with many hands on projects :)
