Medicine We try to use natural medicine wherever possible. Since becoming vegan this has been very easy for us - we really hardly get ill anymore. We were so glad to kiss goodbye to those yearly bouts of flu and ongoing symptoms of arthritis and endometriosis as detailed below. We have used a homeopath in the past to help the children through childhood ailments. Below are some books and sites we found useful or interesting: Society of Homeopaths - the British Society of Homeopaths Vernon Coleman - alternative medical advice from Dr. Vernon Coleman
Vaccines - an emotive subject on both sides of the issue.Really all we can say is read up on this for yourself and make your own decisions. Our research into this subject started long before we ever had kids with information Lucy's biochemist father obtained in medical libraries and while working in the pharmaceutical world. Think for yourselves :) Groups, books and sites on the subject: The Informed Parent, PO Box 870, Harrow, Middlesex, Ha3 7UW. Tel/Fax 0181 861 1022 - stocks lots of great books too. We found this a wonderful source of unbiased information, giving both sides and supporting parents whatever decision they came to.
Some good sites out there on the web are: GP Jayne Donegan has lots of vaccine info on her site. WHALE Vaccine Site - this must be the largest resource on vaccines we have found. Think Twice Global Vaccine Institute - an extensive American site - excellent for learning your rights and state laws in the USA. Vaccination Information and Choice Network - a large and very well researched site by a registered nurse who worked for many years in pediatrics.
Milk (cows) - is it a nourishing food?Yes it is. For baby cows alone. Human beings cannot digest bovine breast milk. We are told that milk is a good source of calcium. It certainly is high in calcium but we cannot absorb it. The human body produces huge amounts of digestive acids in an attempt to break down this unnatural food. This acid has to be neutralised before leaving the body, with calcium. This is leached out of the calcium deposits of the body (bones and teeth). The result being that often more calcium passes out of the digestive system than was put in. This explains why the countries with the largest milk consumption also have the largest incidence of osteoporosis. Good sources of calcium are green leafy vegetables (Granny was right all along), broccoli, tofu, nuts, seeds, beans, tahini, and water. Cows milk also contains the hormone IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor) which allows cancers to grow. This is the only hormone known to man, which is an exact match between two species - humans and cows. It has been shown that every single cancer diagnosed relies on this hormone for growth. Food, Nutrition, and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective. American Institute of Cancer Research. Washington, D.C.: 1997) Got Milk? No thanks. IGF-I has been shown to occur in increased levels in the blood by individuals consuming dairy products on a regular basis (ref:Cadogan J, Eastell R, Jones N, Barker ME. Milk intake and bone mineral acquisition in adolescent girls: randomised, controlled intervention trial. BMJ 1997;315:1255-69). Other sites on this subject: NotMilk Robert Cohen's site - author of 'Milk - The Deadly Poison', a very informative site. pcrm.milk - The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine on why milk is no longer recommended or required. pcrm.dairy - the above group 'What's wrong with dairy products'
'Milk - The Deadly Poison' - Want to know what's really in that white stuff? Robert Cohen tells it to you straight - you'll never want to drink it again!
Our personal story of giving up milk Though the decision to go vegetarian and then vegan was prompted by concerns for animals we experienced what felt like a life changing miracle on ditching the dairy. Lucy had endometriosis and was severely debilatated for a couple of weeks each month - won't get too gory with detail here but it was very painful and of a 'can't go out while like this' level. Surgery was the orthodox solution. Within three weeks of going vegan (had already been veggie so this was mostly giving up milk and a little egg) a total cure was accomplished. Pain free living for the first time since puberty - could hold down a job type health again. Wow. Davie had rheumatoid arthritis, often missing months of work due to the pain and stiffness. It was getting gradually worse and the doctor had a range of drugs ready to try. Two months into veganism and this disappeared. We had tried cutting out acidic fruits/tomatoes etc. without much difference but the milk did it. Again, a life transforming change. Were not alone. In the eleven years since going vegan weve met many others with similar stories. How many drugs are being consumed and operations performed when diet could do it. Of course not everyone will respond the same or have the same causes but some will... The cynic in us can see that no-one makes money out of people changing their diet... in fact, if it were to happen en masse the pharmaceuticals would be weeping into their lemsips.
